It was a game played in good spirit, with Rustons always looking the better side on the night. Welton were hampered by an injury after only 10 minutes to captain and centre half Steve Smith that disrupted the team, but fought well and were kept in the game until late in the second half by an excellent display from goalkeeper James Peachman that earned him the Man Of The Match award from the organisers and sponsors.

The team deserve credit for reaching this final and were excellent ambassadors for Welton Football Club.

Thankyou to the support given to the team by club players, team managers and parents on the night.

Sunday 1st April 2012: Young Dons 1 – 2 Welton

The Under 13s completed their busy spell of three games in four days with a hard-earned 2-1 victory at Young Dons.

Welton kicked off and made the best possible start when Cameron Wylde’s excellent corner was deflected into the net in the second minute. Welton then began to attack confidently, with Callum Gray having a shot over and Sam Cooke one saved, but it was Young Dons who drew level at 1-1 with just under twenty minutes played. Welton almost regained the lead straight away when Sam Baxter’s goal-kick flicked off a defender to Sam Cooke, but Max Wright’s first-time shot from Cooke’s cross was brilliantly saved. Some good defending by Owen Parry foiled a Young Dons attack as half-time approached, and the break was taken with the teams locked at 1-1.

Welton began the second half strongly with Callum Gray and Sam Cooke both having efforts well saved, and with five minutes played they did move 2-1 ahead when Sam Cooke produced a terrific finish to fire Jack Ashall’s great through ball over the advancing keeper from the corner of the 18-yard box. Welton continued to press, looking to give themselves a two-goal cushion, as Callum Gray lifted Tom Caunt’s pass over the keeper but just past the post, Jack Bullivant stabbed a shot over after a throw-in, and a Cameron Wylde corner was desperately scrambled clear. Young Dons, though, were clinging on and still posing a threat, and when some good defending by Sam Baxter conceded a corner Will Frecklington was on hand to save a good header after the ball had been swung over. Max Wright then became the latest Welton player to lift the ball over the keeper but just wide, having been played in by Alessandro Schiaffonati, while Jack Bullivant had a shot from the edge of the box saved, but with ten minutes left to play both teams would have fancied their chances of scoring again. However, good pieces of defending by Paddy Smith and Sam Champion brought the home team’s best attacks to a close, and the score remained 2-1 to Welton when the final whistle blew.

Saturday 31st March 2012: Welton 0 – 2 Spilsby

Welton entertained second-place Spilsby in the second match of their pre-Easter trilogy, and for the second successive game put in a very good display before narrowly going down 2-0.

Spilsby kicked off with conditions considerably chillier than they’d been on Thursday evening, and almost took an early lead when they fired over in the opening minute following a corner. Sam Baxter then had a shot wide from distance, and James Lowry tested the visiting keeper, while at the other end good defending by Sam Champion foiled Spilsby. Both teams continued to look to attack, but neither keeper was really being threatened as a Spilsby cross was headed away by Sam Baxter, while at the other end a teasing ball in by Sam Cooke was cleared for a corner. With half-time seconds away Callum Gray almost scored a carbon copy of his first goal in the previous game against Rustons, but this time his lob from the edge of the box went agonisingly past the post, leaving the teams deadlocked at the interval.

Spilsby began the second half strongly forcing two saves out of Will Frecklington and hitting the bar in the opening five minutes, and it looked like Welton may be in for another rearguard action. A superb run into the box by Max Wright finished with his chipped shot being saved by the keeper, but a minute later Spilsby moved ahead after Will Frecklington’s save from a thundering drive fell to a visiting attacker who poked the ball home. Some good defending by Tom Caunt and a header off the line by Paddy Smith prevented the away team from adding to their lead, but as the game entered its final stages the teams were still just separated by a single goal. Some good battling around the centre circle by Sam Cooke enabled him to thread the ball through for Max Wright, but good defending prevented Wright from getting his shot away after he’d forced his way into the box. However, it was Spilsby who were able to wrap up the points two minutes from the end when they scrambled the ball over the line after a corner.

Thursday 29th March 2012: Welton 2 – 3 Rustons

The Under 13s began a busy spell of three games in four days with an evening visit from league leaders Rustons, going down 3-2 to a late winner after a battling rearguard performance.

Welton kicked off and it was they who had the better of the early exchanges, with Callum Gray having shots wide and over, before he did give the hosts the lead in the ninth minute, showing tremendous vision to lob the keeper from the edge of the 18-yard box. Rustons hit straight back though, having efforts of their own over and wide, but with fourteen minutes played an equalising goal brought the scores back level. Some good defending by Sam Champion and a save by Will Frecklington then prevented Rustons from moving ahead, while at the other end Max Wright was foiled by a visiting defender after being played in by Callum Gray. Two more Rustons attacks were brought to an end by Peter Yarnell and Sam Champion respectively, but with half-time approaching it was Welton who moved ahead when some lovely play between James Lowry and Alessandro Schiaffonati created a chance for Jack Bullivant, and when Bullivant’s shot was saved Callum Gray was quickest to react and gleefully slammed the ball into the net to give the hosts the advantage at the break.

Rustons began the second half and with less than a minute played were back on level terms, and from then Welton found themselves well and truly under the cosh. The home side though, defended valiantly with Sam Baxter, Tom Caunt, Paddy Smith, Sam Champion and Peter Yarnell all breaking down attacks over the next twenty minutes – one outstanding last-gasp block by Sam Champion being up there with the best bits of defending we’ve seen this season. As the game entered its last ten minutes Rustons struck the Welton bar, and it was starting to look like it might not be their day. With seven minutes to go Welton had a chance to take the lead again, but no-one was able to get a touch on Cameron Wylde’s excellent free-kick into the box. This proved to be brief respite though, as Rustons continued their onslaught on the Welton goal, and although they were thwarted by more good defending by Owen Parry and Sam Champion their pressure finally told with a winning goal ninety seconds from the end.

Sunday 18th March 2012: Welton 10 – 1 Swifts

The Under 13s entertained Swifts for their second match of the weekend, romping to a 10-1 victory with a thoroughly dominant performance.

Welton kicked off and tried their luck early, with Jack Ashall and James Lowry shooting from outside the box, before moving ahead after eight minutes when Sam Cooke headed home Cameron Wylde’s corner. Five minutes later it was 2-0, with Cooke again the scorer after he juggled the ball on the edge of the box before looping a shot over the keeper. Midway through the half Sam Baxter, deputising in goal, made his first save of the afternoon from a free-kick, but minutes later it was 3-0 when Cameron Wylde unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard screamer. The home side continued to dominate with Max Wright and James Lowry combining to create a chance for Callum Gray that was saved, and Lowry himself shooting over after being played in by Jack Ashall, but no further goals were added before the break and Welton went in with a healthy 3-0 lead.

Swifts started the second half, but it was Welton who came out on the rampage, scoring five goals in the opening twelve minutes to move 8-0 ahead. Two minutes in Jack Bullivant scored after Alessandro Schiaffonati had headed Jack Ashall’s ball forward into his path, and two minutes later Bullivant was on target again courtesy of a pass through by James Lowry. Bullivant then turned creator as he set up Alessandro Schiaffonati for the sixth, Callum Gray knocked in the seventh after Sam Cooke teed him up following Sam Champion’s ball out of defence, and it was Gray who was on target for the eighth after Cameron Wylde’s free-kick picked him out. Welton showed no sign of letting up as Owen Parry had a shot saved after being found by Max Wright, while Sam Cooke shot wide after a lovely pass through by Paddy Smith. Smith then snuffed out a couple of Swifts attacks before they’d really got started, before Sam Cooke and Callum Gray completed their hat-tricks within ninety seconds of each other – Cooke slotting home Max Wright’s pass, and Gray lashing home a loose ball in the eighteen-yard box. Sam Baxter and Peter Yarnell looked to have secured Welton’s first clean sheet of the season as they combined to keep Swifts out in the last minute, but with the last kick of the game the visitors found the net to make the final score 10-1.

The Under 13s began a double header weekend with a 1-1 draw at home to fellow strugglers HBW.

HBW kicked off, and although Welton dominated the opening stages, eleven minutes had been played before either keeper was brought into the action when Owen Parry had a shot from distance saved. The hosts continued to have the lion’s share of the play, coming close with a teasing Cameron Wylde free-kick that was almost flicked into his own net by an HBW defender, a Jack Ashall header over, and a Max Wright free-kick that was saved. However, it was HBW who went into the break ahead when they scored with the very last kick of the half.

Welton started the second half strongly as they looked to get back on terms, with Jack Bullivant having a shot blocked on the line, before a very good Sam Cooke cross was met with an excellent header by Callum Gray to make it 1-1. A great block by Sam Champion prevented HBW from immediately restoring their lead, while at the other end Cameron Wylde had a shot saved, but it was looking increasingly likely that one goal either way would be enough to claim the win. In the end it was Welton who came closest when Jack Bullivant shot inches wide after a surging run into the box, but 1-1 and shared points was the final result.

Welton 3 – 1 Alford Town

The Under 13s recorded successive victories for the first time this season, as they secured a hard-earned and well-deserved 3-1 win at home to Alford Town.

With Will Frecklington and Cameron Wylde both absent there were positional changes for Welton, as Sam Baxter deputised in goal, Owen Parry slotted in at left-back, and Tom Caunt moved into central defence. Welton kicked off and immediately settled into a neat passing game, getting reward in the eighth minute when the ball broke to Sam Cooke on the edge of the box, from where he curled a left-foot shot past the keeper to record his tenth goal of the season. A brilliant block by Owen Parry prevented Alford getting a quick reply, but midway through the half they did find an equaliser. The visitors then had the better of the remainder of the half, but a good piece of defending by Jack Ashall, and three saves by Sam Baxter ensured the break was taken with the scores level.

Alford began the second half strongly and were thwarted on separate occasions by Paddy Smith, Sam Champion and Owen Parry, but Sam Baxter wasn’t really being troubled between the posts. With twenty minutes of the half played Callum Gray was felled in the box, and for the second match in succession Sam Cooke slammed the ball home from the spot. Seven minutes later Welton gave themselves a two goal cushion when James Lowry was quickest to an Alford goal-kick, before bursting into the area and slotting the ball home. The visitors tried desperately to get back in the game, but two outstanding pieces of defending by Tom Caunt and Owen Parry brought their best attacks to an end, and the hosts were comfortably able to hang onto their lead.

This was an entertaining game of football with both teams playing some neat football, but it was Welton who were able to win the vital battles to deservedly secure the points.

The Under 13s put in a superb performance to record their third win of the season, as they triumphed 7-1 over at Heckington.

Heckington kicked off, and although the Welton boys showed 100% effort and commitment right from the first whistle it was the home side who had the better of the early stages. A shot in the fifth minute was lashed over the bar, while Tom Caunt, Owen Parry and Paddy Smith all foiled attacks before fifteen minutes had been played. However, with the mid-point of the half approaching the visitors won their first corner, and when this was then sent over and handballed it was Sam Cooke who stepped up to score his fourth penalty out of four this season. Welton then began to play with a real fluency, passing the ball around very well, and both Callum Gray and Max Wright came close to doubling Welton’s lead, before Sam Cooke did make it 2-0 when he nicked the ball past the keeper after James Lowry had played a beautiful ball through. Some very good defending by Sam Champion and Jack Ashall denied Heckington as they looked to get a goal back before the break, but it was Welton who made it 3-0 when Jack Bullivant slotted home after a great ball in by Sam Cooke.

The away team began the second half as they’d ended the first, and within two minutes were 4-0 up when Alessandro Schiaffonati headed the ball on for Sam Cooke, who duly teed up Jack Bullivant for his second goal of the game and his fiftieth for the club. The hosts did then launch something of a fightback, and after being thwarted by Peter Yarnell they did manage to get on the scoresheet to make it 4-1. Welton, though, quickly looked to quash any thoughts of a dramatic comeback as they looked to add to their goal tally. Max Wright and Callum Gray both set each other up with chances, but both shot wide, while Owen Parry and Cameron Wylde played a quality little interchange that ended with Wylde having a shot saved, but the fifth goal was proving elusive. Heckington then gave Welton a reminder that they were still around as they hit a post before Will Frecklington saved from the rebound, but with nineteen minutes played Callum Gray found Max Wright who made it 5-1. James Lowry then had an effort hit the outside of the post and another one saved, Callum Gray and Max Wright both forced saves out of the keeper, and at the other end Cameron Wylde comfortably dealt with what was now a rare Heckington foray forward. With stoppage time being played Welton added two more goals – James Lowry setting up Callum Gray, and then Max Wright slotting in the rebound after Callum Gray had had a shot saved following a ball through by Sam Cooke.

This was an outstanding display by the boys. Their work-rate and overall attitude was excellent throughout, while much of their football was a joy to watch. All fourteen boys today should be extremely proud of the way they played, both individually and as part of the team.

LATEST NEWS: BUILDING WORK STARTED IN FEBRUARY

After securing planning permission the redevelopment project has moved ahead at a rapid pace and builders are on site. As well as extending the changing facilities and improving the clubhouse, the project will also see the All Weather Surface replaced by the latest 3G surface – this will enable mini soccer matches to be played here as well as providing excellent floodlit training facilities.

Short term there is some disruption and we are having to adopt a flexible approach to using the facilities through to the end of the season. The work on the AWS is due to start very soon and should be ready by June. There is every reason to look forward with excitement to the opening of the new facilities in the summer.

Full details of the planscan be viewed on the West Lindsey District Council website by clicking here.
